Description

Oblong 8vo (postcard). 1 page. Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau. - Tackling social issues of the Wilhelmine era, Zille was the first to portray the desperate social environment of the Berlin tenements and created original drawings and caricatures for magazines including "Simplicissimus" and "Jugend". His special talent lay in the scathingly humourous portrayal of what were in truth the quite horrible conditions of Berlin's handicapped beggars, consumptive prostitutes, menial labourers, and their children. - Traces of postal stamps; small creases near lower right corner. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
