About The Book: George Watt's "Dictionary of Economic Products of India," published from 1889 to 1893, was initially conceived as a six-volume (In Nine Bindings) project but expanded in scope. The final volume was divided into four parts. This monumental work, often considered the most comprehensive resource on India's commercial plants and natural products, categorizes economic products from A to Z. It evolved from a project aimed at providing information for international exhibitions into a long-term endeavor focused on collecting, investigating, and publishing comprehensive data about India's economic products. The dictionary is a valuable reference that compiles knowledge from Indian authors, official reports, and private inquiries. Botanical nomenclature follows the Flora of British India, and future editions plan to include mineral and animal economic products. Vernacular names are regionally aligned for better understanding. The project benefited from the contributions of numerous collaborators, scholars, officials, and trade statistics. The second volume underwent modifications, emphasizing economic aspects and omitting botanical descriptions and non-Indian trade items. The sixth volume is divided into four parts to enhance its structure, and an index grouping vernacular names by geographical regions is under preparation to facilitate efficient searches based on recorded vernacular terms.
