Description

Umschlag leicht berieben, sonst gutes Exemplar. - This seminal work by a leading psychophysiological dream researcher offers a fundamental reorientation of dream study that for the first time integrates the psychoanalytic insights of Freud's The Interpretation of Dreams with more contemporary findings from cognate fields devoted to studying the activities of the waking mind. In reformulating Freud's model, Dr. Foulkes draws extensively on psychoanalytic ego psychology, the structuralism of L-Strauss and Piaget, Chomskyan linguistics, psycholinguistic research, contemporary cognitive psychology, and recent Soviet contributions to psychology and neuropsychology. Foulkes provides a brilliant synthesis of Freudian dream process psychology and Chomsky's structural linguistics. He shows that the "relationships" of dream imagery are formally identical to the sentence units of linguistic analysis and develops a unique scoring system for the latent structure of dreams through a grammatical analysis of the dream report. His model, which he illustrates by means of an analysis of Freud's famous "Dream of the Botanical Monograph," provides rules for determining the latent dream thoughts from both their dream context and the dreamer's free associations.
