Description

From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Rubbed jacket with small tears, otherwise very good and clean. / Beriebener Umschlag mit kleinen Rissen, sonst sehr gut und sauber. - This is a comprehensive synthesis of Russian intellectual history from the reign of Catherine II to the end of the nineteenth century, emphasizing philosophy but also discussing the European political, social, and economic ideas that expanded Russian intellectual horizons. The authors focus is on those issues that were closest to the hearts of educated Russians, and felt by them to be most relevant to the future of their country. The period covered saw a superb flowering of literature and culture, and demonstrated an unusual cross-fertilization of ideas and influences. Archaic and modern elements coexisted in the social structure and in ways of thinking, so that there was both a rapid influx of new ideas and considerable and varied resistance to them. Professor Walicki cogently assesses the impact on the intellectual elite of European ideas on the one hand, and of rediscovered native forms and traditions on the other. A notable feature of the book is the authors reinterpretation of the two great controversies in Russian nineteenth-century thought: the clash between the Slavophiles and the Westernizers, and the struggles between the Populists and the Marxists. - Andrzej Walicki is a Professor in the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw.
