Description

[Frankfurt am Main, J. C. Hermann, 1823]. 8vo (18.0 x 11.1 cm). Half title, drop head title, 126 pp. Contemporary blind blue, grained boards. = First German translation of a work by the French geologist Aimé Boué (1794-1881). "[He] was a geologist who, ideologically, was strongly influenced by the Industrial Revolution. He recognised the call for scientific research, not merely as ‘l’art pour l’art’ but as a prerequisite for any development of civilisation, particularly during the period of industrial development in the nineteenth century, be it economically, medically, politically or culturally motivated. It was one of his life principles to propagate this holistic approach among scientists and any other groups that might be involved in the practical applications of scientific discoveries.Important for Boué’s further scientific development in Paris were his acquaintances with Pierre-Simon de Laplace (1749-1827), Georges Cuvier (1769-1832), Barthélemy Faujas de Saint Fond (1741-1819), Etienne Geoffroy de Saint Hilaire (1772-1844), René-Just Haüy (1743-1822), and Alexandre Brongniart (1770-1847)." (Schweizer & Seidl). In a neat old hand on the front free endpaper verso the following is written: "Besonderer Abdruck aus von Leonhards' mineralogischem Taschenbuche fur das Jahr 1823". Another inscription (dedication) on the front pastedown, scattered light spotting, otherwise a very good, clean copy. Schweizer, C. and J. Seidl (2011), Ami Boué’s (1794-1881) valuation of geological research regarding its application to human civilisation. pp. 183-199 in Earth Sciences History 30(2); Ward and Carozzi, 270 (French ed.).
