Description

Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Knick im Buchdeckel und leicht berieben, sonst sehr guter Zustand / crease in book cover and slightly rubbed, otherwise very good condition. - PREFACE The present investigation marks the climax of an encounter with Aristotle's Poetics that began in my first undergraduate year in the College of the University of Chicago. My respect for the importance of this highly influential text has grown deeper with years of increasingly close study. Such study has also convinced me that the argument of the Poetics has frequently been seriously misinterpreted because of flawed attempts to understand its central and most intriguing concept, katharsis. From the sixteenth century to the twentieth, philological investigations limited themselves to explaining this concept either as medical purgation or moral purification. They did so because they had abandoned the Poetics itself as a source of enlightenment about this key term, which was not formally defined within its own text. Seeking assistance from the Politics and the Nicomachean Ethics, these interpreters, I believe, have provided a distorted view of important aspects of Aristotle's aesthetic theory. The present work is dedicated to correcting this distorted picture. / CONTENTS PREFACE I INTRODUCTION II KATHARSIS III MIMESIS: THE PLATONIC BACKGROUND IV MIMESIS: THE ARISTOTELIAN CONCEPT V CODA SELECTED BIBLIOGRAPHY INDEX OF PASSAGES CITED GENERAL INDEX.
