To the novelist Jean Middlemass (1833-1919) with an invitation to tea: "I have had no opportunity since I first had the pleasure of meeting you at Mrs Humphrey's at home in the spring, of calling upon you, owing to illness & a sick brother. So, as I am asking the Maxwells & the Humphrys & some more to tea on Thursday [.] I should be so glad if you could give me the pleasure of your company as well. Of course I mean Miss Braddon, whom you may possibly know, also her son & his newly married & very charming wife [.]". - With collector's note to backing paper.
