Description
Oblong 8vo (postcard). 1 page. Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau. - Appointed professor at the Weimar Kunstschule in 1890, Smith applied himself to genre painting and portraiture, depicting scenes of first communion, Norwegian pilots, smokehouses and the setting sun, as well as the contemporary playwright Henrik Ibsen. - Some small ink spots near upper margin; a few small creases. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
