This monograph is the first full length biography of Isaac Mendes Belisario ( 1794- 1849) known simply as Belisario, the engraver, painter and lithographer who produced the masterpiece Sketches of Character, an Illustration of the Habits, Occupation and Costume of the Negro Population in the Island of Jamaica, published as a set of lithographs on the eve of Emancipation in 1837.
