Washington, DC, Smithsonian Institution [United States National Museum], 1901-1950. Eleven volumes in ten. 8vo (23.5 x 15.0 cm). 8172 pp.; 212 plates, 44 (groups of) text illustrations. Various, but contemporary bindings. Spines with gilt title. The last volume in original printed wrappers. = A most important series, started by the American ornithologist Robert Ridgway (1850-1929), and, after a considerable gap following Ridgway's death, continued by anather American ornithologist, Herbert Friedmann (1900-1987). The first two volumes in fine, decorated bindings with gilt inner dentelles, the others in more simple black, pebbled cloth, and the final, 11th, volume in original printed wrappers, uncut. The less voluminous parts IX and X are combined in one binding. Stamp on front pastedowns or front free endpapers recto, and in several margins a small, shallow blindstamp. Some soiling; some worming in the gutter of one volume. Otherwise a very good set.
