He participated in the 1877-1878 Russo-Ottoman wars with the Ottoman army. Her served on both fronts of these wars, in Plevna and in Erzurum. After returning to his own country in 1878, he maintained his relations and ties with the Ottoman Empire and served as Honorary Consul of the Ottoman Empire for nearly thirty years in Melbourne. He related his Plevna and Erzurum memories to his friends for years and spoke with admiration about the Turks. Therefore, he was called "Turkish Charlie" and "Plevna Ryan" by his close friends.
