Description

Paris, H. Agasse, 1796. 4to (25.6 x 19.1 cm). viii, 456 pp. Contemporary mottled half calf over marbled boards. Spine with gilt-rolled bands, floral vignettes and cornerpieces; red morocco label with gilt title. Light blue endpapers. Edges speckled blue. = A rare part of the Ultimate Encyclopaedia and the largest of all great Encyclopaedias and the most important work published during the French Enlightement. This section - complete in itself - written by the French writer and editor Jacques Lacombe (1721-1811), who was responsible for many sections of the famous Encyclopédie Méthodique (e.g., Arts et Métiers Mecaniques, Arts aratoires, etc.). This is the complete text. An atlas, with 32 plates, was published separately, as part of plate Volume IX, otherwise dealing with arts. Old owner's autograph in the top margin of the series-title; small label of a bookseller, Belloy Kardowik, in Brest (Brittany). Boards worn; spine top and foot abraded, as is part of the calf cover on the rear; internally, however, very good, clean. Schmitt, S. (2018) Inventaire des livraisons, des auteurs et du contenu de l’Encyclopédie méthodique (1782-1832).
