H. GRABURN -- What has happened to the so-called "primitive arts" of preindustrial societies? Museums and private collections abound with examples of these arts, but the traditions in which they were created are dying out. Native artists are still producing works of enduring beauty and originality, yet they are doing so as members of minority groups within national societies; such groups are identified here collectively as the "Fourth World" of the title. These small-scale societies, scattered all about the world, are engulfed and sometimes overwhelmed by the economic and aesthetic imperatives of the First, Second, and Third Worlds. -- Native artists have nevertheless been adaptive and resilient, developing new forms based on traditional techniques or motifs, and producing some of their work for the souvenir trade and other materials for the serious collector. More than twenty cases are examined and compared here, ranging from Navajo rugs and Eskimo soapstone sculptures which are relatively new art forms (and mainly -- commercial in intent) to the more traditional Maori wood carvings and Shipibo- Conibo pottery. Other cases such as the watercolor paintings of Namatjira of Australia and the Santa Fe Indian School paintings have been adapted from purely European forms with some concessions made to ethnic flavor and content. -- Both collectors and scholars will find this book indispensable to an understanding and appreciation of Fourth World arts. -- Contents -- List of Maps -- List of Illustrations -- Preface and Acknowledgments -- Introduction: The Arts of the Fourth World, by Nelson H.
