Description

's-Gravenhage [The Hague], Anna Beeck, 1713. Broadsheet (47.5 x 54.3 cm). Engraving by D. Stoopendaal after a drawing by H. Pola. = A fine and detailed print by the Dutch artist Daniel Stoopendaal (1672-1726), being view of a "tableu" designed by the French architect Daniël [de] Marot (1661-1752), and drawn by Henry Pola (1686-1748), presenting fireworks commissioned by the Staten Generaal (Dutch government) on the Hofvijver pond in The Hague during the celebration of the peace treaty of Utrecht, 14 June 1713. In the pond a temple had been erected in an altar-like setting with a painting depicting Peace and Abundance who throne on the clouds with the god Mercury bringing good tidings. Fine and very lively print with all the explosions in the air and the 'pyrotechnicians' running around to ignite the fireworks. This was the pinnacle of what fireworks art could achieve in the 18th century. The title is engraved at the bottom with underneath a bilingual legend, in Dutch and French. Vertical fold, cut close to the margin and mounted on larger sheet; otherwise, in very good condition. Atlas van Stolk, 3415; Hollstein Dutch, Vol. IV.
