Description

Cairo, Ministery of Finance, Survey of Egypt, 1925-1937. Two volumes in four. 4to (27.5 x 18.5 cm). 1883 pp. [I: xliv, 408 pp.; II: 990 consecutively numbered pages, and pages numbered otherwise [I: lxv, 124; II: xxxv, 107; III: xxxv, 75]; 318 [122; 196] plates (several tinted, or in full colour), and several folded tinted or coloured geological maps or profiles. Near uniform original half roan (volume I) and half burgundy buckram (volumes II, parts I-III) over pebbled red linen. Gilt lines and title on the spines. = The most important geological monograph of Egypt, and the magnum opus of the British geologist William Fraser Hume (1867-1949). "In 1897, he moved to Egypt to assist with a huge geological survey of the whole country and in 1909 became Director of the entire Geological Survey of Egypt." (Wikipedia). The bindings are near uniform, althought that of the first volume is somewhat more luxurious. Not present is a much later (1964; i.e., 15 years after the author's death) published volume III, on the stratigraphy of Egypt. Minimal shelf wear only. One plate detached and slightly frayed at edges, otherwise a very good, clean set.
