(engr. by Johann Rudolf Schellenberg), 124 engr. plates with portraits, and c. 130 partly large text- vign., engr. by Schellenberg (82), Bullinger, Holzhalb, J. R. Füssli, Lips, Pfenninger, Stumpf, a.o. 8vo. Contemp. calf. Bookplates Escher im Wollenhof in Zurich in all 4 vols. Zurich, Orell, Gessner and Füssli, 1769-74. Authorative edition of J. C. Füssli (1706-1782) encyclopedic main work. A previously edition in only 2 vols. from 1754 entitled "Geschichte und Abbildung der besten Mahler in der Schweitz" contains only 45 plates. For the first time here we can find many artist portraits, and 10 plates with illustrations by J. B. Keller about the making and erection of the equestrian statue of Louis XIV. An index with all artist's names was published in 1779 and is not present here.
