Description

First separate edition, 4to (215 x 170 mm), [2], 18, [2], 21-72pp., 3 folding engraved plates, text browned and plates dampstained, nineteenth-century half calf, rubbed. William Cowper (1666-1709) was accused one of the greatest acts of plagiarism in all of medical publishing. Govard Bidloo (1649ñ1713) published his Anatomia Humani Corporis in Amsterdam using 105 beautiful plates. A Dutch edition was later published in 1690, but due to poor sales the remainder unbound plates were purchased by Cowper or his publisher. Cowper proceeded to write a new English text, including a great deal of original research and fresh new insights, which was to accompany the plates. However, when the book was published under Cowperís name their was no credit given to Bidloo for the plates. ìThe first item in this book contains the description of Cowperís glands and the second is his reply to Bidloo. Cowperís relatively mild response followed Biblooís attack issued in 1700.îóRussell. Russell, British Anatomy 1525-188, 215; See Garrison-Morton 1214 for the original paper of 1700.
