Description

Washington, DC, Smithsonian Institution, 1856. Large 4to (32.6 x 24.6 cm). 155 pp., 12 lithographed views and geological and topographical maps (some coloured with up to nine colours). Original quarter cloth over original boards. = One of the rarer Hitchcock items on the geology of North America and the same author who published the famous geology of New Hampshire (1874-1978). Deals especially with the Connecticut Valley in New England, e.g. the Gorge at Bellows Falls and the Canon of Chelly. He considered all changes like erosion and deposition which had taken place since the close of the Tertiary period. Published in the series, Smithsonian Contributions to Knowledge. Small, vague library stamps on the title and first text page, including one from the famous Molengraaff library. A very good copy with broad margins and only some wear on the spine (partly chipped at head and foot) and boards. The plates and profiles clean. Ward and Carozzi, 1087.
