Description

München, Lehmann and Wien, Pichter und Sohn, 1906. Two volumes in two. 4to (27.0 x 19.6 cm). 965 [clviii, 402; 405] pp.; 76 [1-41; 42-76] plates of which 67 [33; 34] in full colour. Contemporary uniform half calf over marbled boards. Spine with five, raised bands; compartments with gilt floral vignettes and two morocco labels, red and black, with gilt title. Marbled endpapers. Original printed front wrappers (first with chromolithograph of an orchid mounted) and Anmerkung für den Buchbinder bound in. = The first two volumes - nicely bound - of the best floras of Central Europe and the last complete one ever published. This is the complete section on Pteridophyta, Gymnospermae and Monocotyledones, including all the beautiful orchids of Central Europe. In total 733 species are described and illustrated. In the rear of the second volumes is an index to both volumes. The later parts, from volume 3 onwards, deal completely with Dicotyledones. The full colour drawings are of an excellent quality. The few plain plates deal with grasses, but several grass-plates are in full colour too. Volume 1 is in the first (1906) printing; not the 1936 (some state 1935) reprint. Fore edges uncut. Some, mostly light, spotting to the margins of a few plates in the earliest volumes (as often), and a few text pages, but generally clean. A very good set. Nissen BBI, 840.
