Description

Prefazione di Pietro Toesca Description : An impressively large volume devoted to the Casa Bagatti Valsecchi in Milan (now the Museo Bagatti Valsecchi), rebuilt in 1883 in a neo-renaissance style by its owners, the brothers Fausto and Giuseppe Bagatti Valsecchi, to house their comprehensive collection of Italian works of art of the fifteen and sixteenth centuries. The Bagatti Valsecchi brothers (of whom Giuseppe, still living in 1918, was largely responsible for the present publication) were enthusiasts for the art and architecture of the renaissance period in Lombardy, and their house was one of the most effective late nineteenth-century recreations of a grand town house of renaissance date. The volume¿s excellent photographic plates illustrate every significant feature of the house and all the more important items in the brothers¿ collection of Old Master paintings, furniture, tapestries, bronzes, majolica and so on, and the volume as a whole is a real credit to the Hoepli publishing firm. Large folio. xxxi + (1) pp, 160 photo plates.
