FIRST EDITION of Flaubert's only play. 5, 165 pp. A WONDERFUL ASSOCIATION COPY, WITH A LONG NOTE ON THE FRONT WRAPPER PENNED BY GILLES DE SAINT-GERMAIN (1833-1899), the actor who created the role of Gruchet in this play. He explains that HE BOUGHT THIS COPY FROM FLAUBERT HIMSELF. Printed on very good wove paper. Squarish 12mo. Finely bound in later three-quarters morocco over marbled boards. Top edge gilt, other edges uncut. Original wraps (with Saint-Germain's note) and backstrip preserved. Wraps a bit worn, but binding and contents FINE AND BRIGHT. A wonderful copy that passed from the hands of Flaubert himself to an actor he deeply respected.
