Description

Stuttgart, E. Schweizerbart, 1833-1840. Three parts in six text volumes and one atlas. Text (1834-1840): 8vo (21.0 x 12.6 cm). 3523 pp., several wood-engravings in the text. Contemporary uniform half calf over marbled boards. Spines with gilt ornamerts and title. Marbled endpapers. Edges sprinkled green. Atlas (1837): 4to (26.3 x 21.1 cm). 16 engraved plates of which four partly hand-coloured. Contemporary quarter roan over marbled boards. Blind paper label on front board. Original printed front wrapper bound in. = Rare and important textbook in a complete state by the German botanist Gottlieb Wilhelm Bischoff (1797-1854), who was professor at the University of Heidelberg. It includes the Anhang, "Die botanische Kunstsprache in Form eines Wörterbuches", which seems to be the rarest part. A complete collation, missing in Nissen, is as follows. Erster Band. Allgemeine Botanik I. (1834). 479, xxii (Erklärung Tafeln I-VI); Zweiter Bandes. Erster Theil. Allgemeine Botanik II. (1836) 548, xxiii-lxx (Erkläring der Tafeln VII-XVI); Zweiten Bandes. Zweiter Theil. Allgemeine Botanik. III (1839). 839 pp.; Dritten Bandes. Erste Theil. Specielle Botanik (1840). viii, 524 pp.; Dritten Bandes. Zweiter Theil. Specielle Botanik. II (1840). pp. [525]-1296; Anhang. Enthaltend die botanischen Kunstsprache in Form eines Wörterbuch (1839). 284 pp. Apparently the pagination in the "General botany" starts anew with each volume, whereas those in the "Special botany" are continuous. As usual a bit foxed in the text and the first three plates (in the margins). Two old private owner's stamp (both Danish) on the first blank, one repeated on text volume titles and rear free endpaper verso. Two old stamps on atlas title page verso (recto clean). In all a very good set. Nissen BBI, 167; Stafleu and Cowan, 533.
