Colour illustrated double-page half title in each volume, illustrated on every page with more than 1200 pictures from contemporary sources. 4to, publisher's red buckram, the upper covers with American Eagles in gilt, the spines with gilt stars and ruled lines in blue, gilt lettering within a blue field, in the original colour pictorial dustjackets, one showing a Western scene, one showing an industrialized community, and in the original view-through slipcases gilt lettered. xiii,573; 503 pp. The books are quite fine and fresh, appearing unused, the jackets with minor mellowing to the spine panels and a little chipping and edgewear, the slipcases still bright and fresh with just a touch of age but still very solid and firm.
