About The Book: The current list aims to revise and expand Dr. Fuhrer's previous compilation of Christian Tombs and Monuments from 1895. The revision involves simplifying the arrangement, verifying epitaphs with the help of district officers, and creating a bibliography. The list now contains 989 entries, a significant increase from the original 599, attributed mainly to new additions. Covering the period from 1611 to 1908, the epitaphs document various historically significant events, including those related to the English and Dutch factories and the Jesuit Mission in Agra, as well as events like the Naini Tal landslip of 1880 and the Manipur rebellion. The list honors numerous Anglo-Indian figures, ranging from John Mildenhall, believed to have the oldest English tomb in India, to individuals like Quinton, Capper, and Sir John Strachey. The list encompasses a diverse group of accomplished individuals, including soldiers, statesmen, civilians, doctors, missionaries, and more, who contributed to various campaigns, governed regions, and served in different capacities in India.
