Description

Umschlag berieben. Papierbedingt leicht gebrt. - Mr. John Jackson died in November 1952. This posthumous work, less than half of which consists of a modified and improved version of two articles published in 1941, deals primarily with the Greek dramatic poets, but also with many passages from prose authors. The discussion centres on points of textual criticism, but the writer, like all great critics, throws fresh light on the meaning of any passage he examines. Many of his emendations in Euripides, Aristophanes, Plutarch, and others may be considered final, and all his suggestions leave a sting in the reader's mind. Jackson presents his profound learning with inimitable grace: he is never presumptuous, never dull. Ridentem dicere verum was one of his many gifts.
