Description

Berlin, Georg Reimer, 1852. Two chromolithograhed plates with additional, original hand-colouring. Oblong (25.2 x 33.6 cm). = Rare plates of the zoological results of an expedition to the then little explored southeastern coasts of Africa, opposite Madagascar, now known as Moçambique (Mozambique, German: Mosambik). The subtropical fauna has many endemic elements and therefore it does not come as a surprise that this early exploration yielded many new species. These two plates were drawn and engraved by the German painter, lithographer, and natural history artist Johann Daniel Lebrecht Franz Wagner (1810-1883). They show two species of antelopes, viz., Antilope hastata (plate XL), and A. lichtensteinii (plate XLIV). The complete zoology deals with mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and insects. Some creasing to the margins; one plate (XL), with several short tears in the lower margin, not reaching the caption, otherwise very good. Nissen ZBI, 3139.
