Trento, Castello del Buonconsiglio, 8 luglio - 5 novembre 2017. A cura di Giovanni Carlo Federico Villa, Marina Botteri e Laura. Dal Prà. Trento, 2017; br., pp. 495, ill. col., cm 22x28. An extensive exhibition in Buonconsiglio Castle reveals the stature of Marcello Fogolino, a remarkable artist whose fame as a painter was partially eclipsed by his private affairs. His conviction for the murder of a barber, apparently carried out together with his brother, his banishment, his spying activities in favour of the Venetian Republic and the highs and lows of his career paint the picture of a dramatic and controversial figure. The scope of the displays is to allow the wider public to learn more about the artist, forced to stay at length in Trento, who gradually succeeded in acquiring the esteem of Prince Bishop Bernardo Cles with his works, until he eventually became court painter. The exhibition winds its way through the rooms of the Magno Palazzo, with its fresco decorations painted partly by Romanino and Dossi and partly by Fogolino himself. It begins with the altarpieces that distinguished the evolution in his stylistic development in Vicenza and the province of Pordenone, highlighting the wealth of the artistic and cultural heritage of the Triveneto area and taking a closer look at relationships and cultural collaboration with other artists in Vicenza, including Giovanni Bonconsiglio, Bartolomeo Montagna and Francesco Verla.
