Descrizione

From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - A few light brown stains on marginal yellowed endpapers. Otherwise in good condition. - Content: Despite John Philoponus' influence on medieval philosophy and more particularly on medieval and Renaissance science, there is no general book-length treatment of him. This collection of twelve essays traces the many facets of Philoponus thought and draws on knowledge from the diverse disciplines that are relevant to it. The first chapter, by Richard Sorabji, offers a general account of Philoponus (ca. A.D. 490-570); it is followed by two chapters on religion a depiction of Philoponus contributions to Christian doctrine and an account of Simplicius polemics. Chapters 4 and 5 deal with impetus theoryits origins and the route of its transmission. Two subsequent chapters are concerned with Philoponus influential Corollaries on Place and Void and his conception of space. After a chapter on later Greek treatments of self-consciousness, three essays consider Philoponus views on the creation of the universe and its future destruction. The final essay offers the fullest documentation to date of Philoponus impact on Renaissance science, with special reference to his views on space and vacuum. Accessible and interesting to nonspecialists and experts alike, this book will prove valuable to historians and philosophers of science, classicists, and orientalists. Contributors: Wolfgang Bernard.
