Description

90 x 140 mm. A family photograph of Ivo Vojnovic with his mother and sisters. - Count Ivo Vojnovic was one of the most important authors of modern Croatian literature. Born in Dubrovnik in 1857 as a scion of the Serbian noble house of Vojvonic, he studied law in Zagreb and worked in the civil service until 1907. The same year, his interest in the theatre became a professional pursuit, and he started as a playwright at the Croatian National Theatre. Wishing to become a professional writer, he travelled to Italy, Prague, Budapest, and Belgrade between 1911 and 1914. He was arrested by the Austro-Hungarian authorities for his pro-Yugoslav activities and spent three years in jail. A well-published and popular author during his own lifetime, Vojnovic is still today celebrated as the author who perhaps best reflects the social change in Dubrovnik in the early 20th century, along with the city's people and traditions. His most notable work is the Trilogy of Dubrovnik, depicting the fall of the Dubrovnik Republic. - A crease near the lower right margin, a note on the verso in green pencil.
