Description

First edition, 7 vols., royal 8vo, bookplate, frontispieces, numerous illustrs., orig. publishers red buckram, lettered in gilt, uncut. The last book was published posthumously but written in the lifetime of the author. The anonymous benefactor who accompanies the author on his travels is named in the preface to volume 7 as Mr Watts of Abney Hall, which was left to the University of Manchester together with its collections, which have not survived in the condition that they were bequeathed. The author (1843-1919) was a JP, an Alderman of the City of Manchester and past President of the Lancashire and Cheshire Antiquarian Society. Rare to find a full set of all seven volumes, volume one contains a compliment slip from Mr James Watts himself who also took the photographs.
