Description

Leiden, E. J. Brill, 1881-1923. Ten volumes in eight. 8vo (24.0 x 16.5 cm). Uniform half morocco over pebbled boards. Spines with four raised, gilt-ornamented bands; compartments with gilt lines and title (volumes I-IX), near matching binding, without raised bands for volume 10 (last). = The series was started by the German-Dutch geologist, palaeontologist and director of the Geological Museum of Leiden, Johann Karl Ludwig Martin (1851-1942) and the German geologist and mineralogist Carl Ernst Arthur Wichmann (1851-1927), and continued by the Dutch geologist Berend George "Beer" Escher (1885-1967), brother of the famous illustrator, M. C. Escher. "[Wichmann] became professor at Utrecht University. Geological research was never done at Utrecht before, and Wichmann committed himself to the task of starting a geological institute. Apart from setting up research and education Wichmann had to start a geological collection, for which reason he participated in expeditions to Dutch colonies, in 1888-1889 to the Dutch East Indies (Celebes, Flores, Timor and Rotti) and in 1902-1903 to New Guinea" (Wikipedia). Contents are mostly palaeontological (featuring molluscs in particular), but also mineralogical, volcanological, geographical, etc. Most papers are well-illustrated. Volumes I-III bound in one. The others bound per volume. Some occasional light foxing; boards of the first, combined, volume detached and the spine cover partly cracked, but can be restored; all other volumes with some very light shelf wear only, thus overall in very good condition.
