Description
PAGE PROOFS FROM GIULIO ARTISTIDE SARTORIO'S "SIBILLA", one of the greatest Italian illustrated books of the 20th century, SIGNED IN INK BY THE PUBLISHER, ETTORE COZZANI. One bifolium (two leaves / four pages, the last page blank), with one full-page hors-texte etching, one smaller etching, and one page of etched text. The author/illustrator used relief etchings for both images and text. In the illustrations we see a marvelous ambiguity of positive and negative values: as Jentsch points out, Sartorio effectively used relief etching to create a woodcut effect. Printed on fine wove paper. Folio. FINE AND BRIGHT. With related letters by Cozzani and Alfredo Mortier. Jentsch 462 (full-page illustration). See also Word & Image vol. 10, no. 2, p. 194. A rare survival.
