Description

8vo., Second and Best Edition; handsomely bound in contemporary full roan BY STAUNTON, sides with triple frame border in blind stopped at corners by gilt rosettes, back with five raised bands tooled in gilt, second compartment with red leather label ruled and lettered in gilt, all other compartments elaborately tooled in blind to an oval pattern, red sprinkled edges, doublures tooled in blind, buff endpapers, one or two small scuff marks on lower board else a remarkably bright, fresh, clean copy. With a nineteenth century engraved armorial bookplate on front paste-down (some light offsetting to free endpaper), and Staunton's binder's ticket on rear paste-down. Dedicated to Hugh Jones, Archdeacon of Essex, Soames' history was first published in 1835. The present edition introduces italic type for Saxon terms to aid reference and comprehension. A most attractive copy in wholly unrestored contemporary binding.
