8vo., Second Impression, with coloured frontispiece (original tissue guard present), 15 plates in sepia and 113 monochrome plates on 64; original navy blue ribbed cloth, upper board lettered in gilt, gilt back, gilt top, uncut, a very good, bright, clean copy. First published in 1909. Bright copy of a substantial and learned work. Its four sections examine the British tar in (i) literature, biography, pamphlet and satire; (ii) mystery, pageant, comedy and drama; (iii) sea stories, novels, magazines and chap-books; (iv) poems, ballads, songs and doggerel. There is a final section on the seaman and nautical life in pictorial form.
