8vo., First edition, with folding chart as frontispiece, some mild offsetting to front free endpaper; original mustard cloth, upper board and backstrip lettered in black, a very good, bright, clean , crisp copy. WITH THE BOOKPLATE OF J. BANNISTER HOWARD AND J. B. MULHOLLAND OF THE KING'S THEATRE, HAMMERSMITH ON FRONT PASTE-DOWN. The detachable competition entry form (originally present at rear) is not present in this copy. Howard and Mulholland were leading theatrical impresarios at the turn of the nineteenth century (Mulholland later founded the Wimbledon Theatre). It is possible that this copy was presented following a stage production of Wallace's famous story.
