He noted, for instance, that "the Hawaiian Avifauna is so peculiar in its character that it must necessarily be referred to a division separate from the rest of the Pacific Islands". He ends with a call to his fellow ornithologists to produce seven new works on seven faunas to fill gaps in knowledge, for instance, number 3: "A synopsis of the birds of the Sunda Islands and other islands of the Malay Archipelago down to Wallace's line".
