Boston, MA, Ticknor and Fields, 1861. 8vo (19.2 x 12.6 cm). xxi, 4446 pp.; wood-engraved frontispiece, wood-engraved plates. Original blind-stamped cloth with gilt title on the spine. Brown endpapers. = Rare first American edition. A classic scientific treatise continuing the work of Agassiz and Forbes and dedicated to Faraday, a close friend and collegue at the Royal Institution. In 1860 Tyndall made an early assault on the Matterhorn which, together with two subsequent expeditions to Switzerland, formed the basis for this book and for the author's enthusiasm for mountaineering. Spine sunned, former owner's small stamp on the front pastedown; early dedication on the front free endpaper recto, otherwise avery good, clean copy. It is rare to see this in an intact original binding.
