Description

London, Blackie and Son, 1866. Two volumes in two. 8vo (22.1 x14.0 cm). Each volume with frontispiece (tissue-guarded), and double title pages; one engraved with large vignette, and one in letterpress. 1068 pp. [xxx, 478; xvi, 540]; 11 [6; 5] fine steel engraved, tissue-guarded plates (one double-sized) and two folded maps. Original uniform blindstamped and gilt-ornamented cloth. = Rare second (?) edition (no other copies on the internet). First published by Blackie in 1857. Deals with the history of a Chrisian sect; the illustrations, however, show scenery - in particular the southern Alps. Provenance: pictorial bookplate of the Mark Skinner Library in Manchester, VT, dated 1897, and blindstamp of the same in the margin of the letterpress titles. The original purplish cloth faded to a light tan, and a bit brittle at the rear joints, both as usual. Internally very good, clean.
