As early as the Great Exhibition of 1851 in London, replicas of parts of well-known buildings (such as the Alhambra) were displayed inside the main structure, the Crystal Palace; separate pavilions for different nations outside the main exhibition hall were first built for the Paris Universal Exposition of 1867. By gathering architectural pieces from all over the world, the fair grounds introduced the notion of an imaginary journey and created a new type of tourism, en place. Architectural displays became indispensable at every fair, setting the precedent for the "period room" and the "outdoor architectural museum.".
