Description

A reprint of two novels in one volume. 8vo, publisher's original black cloth, lettered on the spine in gilt, publisher;s emblem in blind on upper cover, in the original pictorially decorated dustjacket. 328pp A very fine copy, near as new but for some extremely minor rubbing to the edges and shoulders of the dustjacket.

Edizione: special reprinted edition of two of powell's earliest works. venusberg was only his second nove. lpublished in 1932, it is set in an unidentified baltic country which draws clearly on powell's experiences in finland and estonia. some see the novel as part of the ruritanian tradition (such as the prisoner of zenda), or perhaps a modernist pastiche of the form. agents and patients combines two of the aspects of 1930s life, film and psychoanalysis. in what powell himself has acknowledged is a roman a clef of sorts, a comically critical eye is cast across entre deux guerres society and its often self-indulgent, usually unsatisfied quest for contentment.
