Description

Breslau, Hamburg, Perthes-Besser und Mauke, 1851. 4to (29.5 x 22.7 cm). 74 pp. Original printed wrappers. = Interesting essay on the most important and oldest still existing scientific society in Germany. It published the famous Miscellanea Curiosa, Acta and Nova Acta Leopoldina. The Leopoldina was founded in the city of Schweinfurt on 1 January 1652 under the Latin name Academia Naturae Curiosorum, and currently it is the German Academy of Sciences. The German botanist, mycologist, zoologist and physician Christian Gottfried Daniel Nees von Esenbeck (1776-1858) was president of the society for 40 years, from 1818 until his death. Nees von Esenbeck "was a contemporary of Goethe and was born within the lifetime of Linnaeus. He described approximately 7,000 plant species (almost as many as Linnaeus himself). His last official act as president of the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina was to admit Charles Darwin as a member" (Wikipedia). Uncut. Spine repaired, outer edges frayed, otherwise good. Rare.
