Description

First edition thus, with advance copy compliments card laid in from George Macy announcing the book will be available in bookshops "after October 25." Illustrated with sixteen impressive colourplates from auto-lithographs drawn on stone by English painter Barnett Freedman. 8vo, publisher's original Barnett Freedman decorated boards backed in salmon cloth, the wide backing with triple-ruled gilt lines at the board edge, the spine with large gilt lettering, lithographic endpapers. In the scarcely encountered original glassine and black paper-covered slipcase. xxx, [2], 331 pp. A pristine copy, the book is as mint, even the glassine is essentially fine with just a little wear at the edges, the slipcase fine as well but for two small abrasions on the lower corners.

Edizione: the handsome heritage press edition of this mainstay of gothic literature beautified with lithographs of barnett freedman. the edition was designed by oliver simon and printed under his supervision at the curwen press in london.<br> a prize title of english literature-this was bronte's only novel, and it was unconventional and 'disagreeable' to contemporary reviewers who tended to dwell on its morbid and painful aspects. charlotte bronte, in a preface to the 1850 edition, felt compelled to write an apology for the work's intensity. but early neglect was overtaken by 'a general recognition of the mastery of an extremely complex structure, acute evocation of place, poetic grandeur of vision, and highly original handling of gothic and romantic elements inherited from lesser works.'
