Description
Dresden, C. C. Meinhold & Söhne, 1866. Large 8vo (25.7 x 18.2 cm). Engraved frontispiece, 19 pp.; text figure. Contemporary half cloth over marbled boards. Original printed front wrapper mounted on front board. = A rare paper by the great German geologist [Carl] Bernhard von Cotta (1808-1879), this being an offprint from the "Festschrift für das hündertjährige Jubiläum der S. K. Bergakademie zu Freiberg". The plate shows a tableau with several giant stones and ammonites, a fossil tree trunk and a man, standing aside, for comparison. Pictorial bookplate of the Hungarian geologist Hugó Böckh (1874-1931) on the front pastedown. One corner of the leaves creased, otherwise a good copy. Not in Ward and Carozzi.
