Description

Les œuvres françoises de Joachim du Bellay
Gentil-homme Angevin, & Poëte excellent de ce temps. Revues, & de nouveau augmentées de plusieurs poésies non encores auparavant imprimées.
Paris: Chez Abel L’Angelier, 1584.
Abel L’Angelier, the publisher of Montaigne and the 16th-century intellectual elite, produced this edition closely following Morel’s 1574 version. He created a reworked edition with updated layout, spelling, and typography, and added previously unpublished commemorative sonnets, thereby stabilizing the Pléiade corpus for future generations.
The corpus of this edition became the standard for the subsequent Rouen editions (Brunet I 749), and remained unchanged until the Lemerre edition of 1866 (where Marty-Laveaux favored the Morel and Aubert versions). This specific copy was bound in 1855 by Hippolyte Duru, one of the greatest binders of the 19th century, then at the height of his craft.
Duodecimo (142 x 85 mm) with fine margins. [2] blank flyleaves, [1] title page, [11] ff. comprising the Epistle to the King, a sonnet by Scévole, the table of contents, an unpublished sonnet in homage to the author, and the order of works; 583 ff., [1] f. colophon, [2] blank flyleaves.
Binding signed by Hippolyte Duru (1855): Full red morocco, triple gilt fillets framing the boards, dotted gilt lines on the raised bands, compartments finely decorated with gilt fleurons. Gilt-lettered title piece indicating title, printer, and year. Gilt-over-marbled edges, hand-sewn headbands, gilt fillets on the headcaps, and gilt dentelles on the inner edges of the boards. Marbled paper endpapers framed by gilt dentelles, white flyleaves.
A very pleasing library volume. The decision to have it bound in 1855 by Duru with the finest finishes (evidenced by the dorure sur marbrure) underscores the high value attributed to this specific edition at the time. The 19th century saw a revival of interest in Du Bellay, culminating in 1866 with the first reissue of the complete works since the 1597 Rouen edition.
Condition : In a very fine state of preservation. The binding retains all its freshness and structural integrity; the interior shows very few defects or soiling (see photos). Minor traces of old oxidation on the boards. A slight protrusion of a gathering at the bottom of the fore-edge, bound as such by Duru.
Bibliography:
Bulletin du Bibliophile Techener, January 1st, 1842, p. 3.
Brunet I 749.
Tchemerzine III 77.
Note: Tchemerzine appears to overlook the presence of the unpublished sonnet attributed to Dauphine des Jardins de Provence, as he only records it from the 1592 edition onwards.
