Richard Pommer here presents a new theory of Piedmont's outstanding contribution to European architecture in the years 1700-1750. He discusses in detail a dozen major buildings, mainly churches and palaces, and identifies a school in which architects thought of their buildings in surprisingly modern terms as spatial enclosures rather than walled structures.
These "open structures," with their perforated vaults, piers, and walls with great apertures and skeletal supports, all give the viewer an exhilarating sense of openness and freedom. First envisioned by Guarino Guarini, and later developed by the great Filippo Juvarra and his disciples, Benedetto Alfieri and Bernardo Antonio Vittone, the style remains among the most beautiful and interesting in the annals of architecture.
In his first chapters, Mr. Pommer, traces the origins of these concepts in French and Italian architecture of the seventeenth century, particularly the work of Guarini. The core of the book deals with Juvarra's development of these ideas, and shows in detail, with many new documents, draw-ings, and photographs, how he worked with the innovations in his little-known chapel at Venaria Reale; the long-destroyed, forgotten, but historically important church of Sant'Andrea in Chieri; his projects for the Duomo Nuovo of Turin, one of the largest and most elaborate cathedral projects in Europe; and the church of San Filippo Neri in Turin, with new evidence of Guarini's work on this building.
The author also offers the first full evaluation in English of the Palazzina di Stupinigi, with many new documents and some new drawings. Alfieri's church of SS. Giovanni e Remigio in Carignano, one of the more bizarre of eighteenth-century crea-tions, is considered in detail, and a concluding chapter presents new material on the life and career of Vittone, whose work has won increasing attention in the past decade.
