Description
8vo., Fourth Impression thus, with frontispiece, 21 plates on 12 and 2 full-page maps in the text; pictorial cloth blocked in colours, backstrip lettered in silver, a fine copy without slip-case. The publisher's slip-case is not present with this copy. Unabridged reissue of the classic account of the kidnapping of General Karl Kreipe on the island of Crete; yet another episode in the astonishing war service of Paddy Leigh Fermor (who here contributes an interesting afterword). Initial requests for publication had been denied as recently as 1945, and the book was chosen to lead the BBC's famous radio series 'Now it can be told' of 1950.The striking wrap-around cover design by David Rooney was created specifically for this edition.
