Second edition, 8vo (215 x 130 mm), vii, [1], 345, [1] + 6pp., of publishersí adverts, text woodcut of Haslamís ëKeyí, small hole to upper blank margin of title page, faint unobtrusive ink library stamp, later plum cloth. ìHaslam considered the enlarged second edition. to be his magnum opus; it remained a standard work for several years. This edition includes an illustration of Haslamís infamous ìkey,î an instrument used to force patientsí mouths open to receive food, medicine, etc.; the key was intended as an improvement to earlier methods of artificial feeding, as it preserved the patientsí teeth.îóHook & Norman.
