Prima edizione francese della raccolta delle migliori opere del Bentham, principale propugnatore dell'utilitarismo e avverso alla teoria del contratto sociale. Traduttore e curatore dell'edizione il suo discepolo Etienne Dumont: «Even in the English-speaking world it was largely through Dumont's versions that Bentham came to be read» [Dinwiddy, </span><i>Radicalism and Reform in Britain</i>, 293].
