Description
8vo (170x103 mm). [7], 4-31, [1 blank] pp. With two manuscript annotations on p. 8. Modern wrappers. A good copy.
Rare first separate edition of Babbage's exploration of the effects of the Industrial Revolution on the British working class. Following the publication of The Economy of Machinery and Manufactures in 1832, Babbage added three chapters to examine questions of political economy and the impact of machines on human labor (On money as a medium of exchange, On a new system of manufacturing, and On the effect of machinery in reducing the demand for labour). These chapters were added to the work for the third edition in 1833. To make them available to purchasers of the first and second edition, the additional chapters were also issued separately, as here.
