12mo., First Edition, with an engraved frontispiece and numerous engraved illustrations in the text, some very light and occasional age-staining, wanting free endpapers, neat contemporary inscription on front paste-down; original blue cloth, upper board and backstrip elaborately blocked and lettered in gilt and blind, all edges gilt, yellow endpapers, case a little shaken else a bright, firm copy. With the binder's ticket of Lewis & Sons of Gough Square, London on rear paste-down, and 10pp publisher's catalogue bound in at end. The first appearance of this popular tale that was reissued many times across the last half of the nineteenth century. The engravings are uneven in quality; those signed by Geo. Meason are by far the best. The first edition is scarce.
